Our Project:

Extend and Replace the Turtle Enclosure at Tuckahoe State Park

There are many different steps in working on the Silver Award for Girl Scouts. We will be documenting them here and on “Our Project” page.

First, we needed to decide what we wanted to do that would have a lasting impact on the community. We both love animals! So we decided this would be our focus. We researched at least 6-7 places that help animals and found that Tuckahoe State Park needed the Turtle Enclosure rebuilt and extended. We met with Ranger Dietrich in October. He told us about the enclosure and what he had in mind for the new enclosure. We went to the existing enclosure and did some measuring and figured out what materials could be reused.

We needed a plan of action!

We researched on the internet what type of enclosures were used for turtles and what kind of habitats they liked. We found 2 ideas for our enclosure.

One idea was the 1/2 door to open and close (picture on the top) and the other was the A frame top on the enclosure (picture on the bottom).

We worked on our plan and had Emma’s grandfather guide us in the design.

This is what we came up with:

The Enclosure will be an A-frame made out of 2 x 4 pressure treated lumber. The size will be 6′ x 10′ and we will reuse 2 sides of the enclosure. The two new sides will be made out of 2 pieces of 8” x 2” pressure treated lumber. We will need hinges for the 6 doors.

Next, we had to get the project approved by the ranger. He approved it with no problem!!!

We brain stormed about fundraising and we’re both really excited about doing a Flamingo “Flocking” Fundraiser!!

Our Fundraiser will run from November 1st, 2018 to December 1st, 2018. Keep an eye out on our blog to see who gets flocked!!!

(Updated on November 29th, 2018.) Our flocking fundraiser is almost over! We have raised over $500 for the materials for our enclosure! We would like to thank everyone that donated money to help us with our project. The turtles at Tuckahoe will definitely appreciate it!!
